Biomedical & Biohazardous Waste Disposal in Northwest Territories

Covering 1.3 million square kilometres of land, the Northwest Territories (NWT) province of Canada is a behemoth of remote mountain ranges, glittering waterfalls, historic wildlife preserves, and woodlands left untouched by mankind. Nature lovers flock from all over the world to visit the Nahanni National Park reserve and witness the romantic spectacle of the midnight sun.

If you had to guess which Canadian province had the highest GDP per capita, you’d probably guess somewhere like Quebec or Ontario, right? Well, contrary to popular belief, the Northwest Territories actually has the highest median income in Canada. This is due in part to the fact that NWT is the world’s 3rd largest producer of diamonds, second to Russia and Botswana. The Canadian diamond industry is a welcomed alternative to the blood diamonds imported from Africa, which are typically mined in war zones and used sold to finance insurgencies.  Diamonds mined in NWT are, thankfully, ethically mined and the land surrounding is protected by laws to ensure preservation

The capital city of Yellowknife is the largest city in the entire territory. There is not much competition here though, because it also happens to be the only city in the province! In one of the local native languages, Dorgib, Yellowknife is referred to as “Somba Ke”, which translates to “The Money Place”. The city began as a mining settlement in 1924, but still holds the cultural institutions of art and wooden heritage buildings.

In addition to diamonds, NWT is home to a variety of other natural resources such as gold, natural gas, and petroleum. Government officials have been proactive in setting up parametres for residents to ensure the integrity, biological diversity, and productivity of the ecosystems here. As a company with values rooted in environmental welfare, Daniels Health supports the deep connection residents in NWT feel towards their land. Biomedical waste doesn’t have to be a burden on our planet, which is why sustainable outcomes are at the forefront of our mission in making healthcare safer.
