Frequently Asked Questions

Do biohazard waste rules differ by province?

Yes. Biomedical waste is regulated provincially, so definitions, container colours, storage temperatures, and manifest requirements differ across Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia, Alberta, and the rest of the country. Federal rules sit on top of that for transport and for higher-risk pathogens. Facilities operating in more than one province often run different segregation rules at each site. Daniels Health services all of these markets and configures every site to its own provincial requirements. Province-by-province detail is on our standards and regulations page.
